I followed Dalles Mountain Road beyond the ranch (rough) and parked at the small pullout by the locked gate.
Beneath the rocky cliffs by the parking area - lots of wildflowers are coming out.
Flowers on the green hillsides.
Still a tiny bit of snow near the top feeding this little creek.
Looking back on the columbia river - mt hood in the clouds.
This is a road hike, but the flowers, lack of cars, and views make it interesting.
Shortly below the summit you pass a radio tower.
And an FAA facility at the summit
View to the north - Mt Adams
Confirmation that it is an FAA facility, not an alien spaceship.
View south from the summit - Columbia river (and mt hood still in the clouds)
Smooth-Leaf Douglasia (?)
Blue Eyed Mary
Heading back down - car is parked on the dirt road to the right of the photo.
Unpigmented Grass widow
Arrowleaf Balsamroot is starting to bloom
I visited Haystack Butte on my way out to see the petroglyphs.
These petroglyphs were cut out of a canyon upriver that was flooded when a dam was built. Not exactly a great message to people who are told to leave them alone.
But this one is so cool, glad it wasn't buried under the water.
