The snow line was right around 6k. We pulled into the Lone Pine Campground and parked, then followed a road towards whitney
Tracks and the alabama hills below.
We avoided the main road since there were lots more people playing over there.
You can see the main road zigzag up the mountainside across the creek (it is closed at this time of year)
Breaking trail. It was really fluffy stuff so we sank in a bit - not like the normal sierra cement.
Looking down on the Alabama Hills and across at the Inyos
Fresh, unbroken snow. Which we were sinking up to our thighs in, even with snowshoes.
Making david do the hard work
Whitney peeking out
We got up to a point where we had a good view of whitney then decided to turn around. The snow was too soft to break trail all the way to the portal.
You can see the tracks on the main road below
View back down the hill
Looking North towards the whites
Down was much more fun. Wheeee.
Back on the track, much easier to move.
The sun sets so early behind the mountains out here!
One last look back at Whitney
