On Sunday morning we decided to go for a hike to the top of Chocolate Peak (11,682'). Chocolate Peak is not the tallest or most spectacular peak in the region, but it has the advantage of rising up in the middle of a beautiful basin of lakes, offering amazing views of the surrounding peaks. The trail starts at South Lake (9,768') trailhead and heads in toward Bishop Pass. Instead of going all the way to Bishop Pass after passing Long Lake, we looped up to the smaller pass over Ruwau Lake, then followed some unmapped use trails up the ridge to Chocolate Peak. We came back down to the pass and continued down to the other side, making a loop out of the hike as we passed the Chocolate Lakes and Bull Lake. All in all, it is an easy and enjoyable loop hike.
