Working out way towards Arrow Peak. Our route will take us to the left of the lower peak in the center. Arrow peak is on the right.
It's an easy cross country walk from Bench Lake for now.
Emerging from the treeline into talus and freaking mosquitoes
Sooz in the talus. Tomorrow's hike destination in the distance.
Ice on a small stream. Cold up here!
Oh if only the memories of this beautiful place weren't tainted by the memories of mosquitoes. The worst I've experienced. Ugh.
We're heading up that-a-way. Aiming to the right of the snow.
Last trees and green. Hoping the mosquitoes will go away when we get off the green.
Arrow Pass from below. It was snowed over but it was still easy to gain the ridge just to the right of the low point.
Looking back down. Pretty.
I look back and notice Split Mountain - finally realizing how it got the name 'Split'
In the snow - just to the right of center - see the deer? She took off running down the suncupped snow.
Arrow Pass. And snow.
No problem - easy to avoid by hopping through the talus on the right.
Looking back down.
The mosquitoes are still horrendous until I top out at the pass and feel some breeze. Ugh.
And Arrow Peak. Take the chute straight to the summit.
Split Mountain and Cardinal Peak
Split and Cardinal
Our route up Arrow - following the narrow line of snow up the chute to the summit
View to the southwest from Arrow Pass
View of Bench Lake - camp. Split Mtn is the big peak on the horizon
Our route is up the small snowpatches
Bench Lake, South Fork Kings, Ruskin, Split, Cardinal
And now the final climb. Scree and talus. Whee.
Started off with a pretty easy/gentle grade. It got a bit steeper towards the top but the rock more stable. I took a kinda harder route than I needed (approaching class 3) but still pretty easy.
Holy awesome view batman! Arrow is worth the hard work just for this view. Check out Bench Lake, and the South Fork canyon just next to it. I can see the three rock slides we'll be crossing the next day as we take the old JMT towards Cartridge Pass. On the horizon are all kinds of 14ers - the Palisade Crest and Split being the main ones.
Bench Lake, South Fork slides, Taboose Pass, Striped Mtn.
Looking back down our route up Arrow - here comes Sooz!
View to the west
South Fork and slides
Bench Lake. How awesome does that look from up here? Our camp is on the left side of the lake on a bluff. Great views from there but better from here!
