First we stopped by the Thomas Condon visitor center to learn about the paleontology work going on in the John Day basin.

Outside the Paleontology Center
When we left Bend it was pouring rain, but two hours to the east the sun came out and we saw some rainbows over the colorful landscape.
The island in time trail is a short in and out hike among the blue basin.
Blue Basin overlook trail is a longer loop trail.

They have replica fossils in the general state of which they were found. This is a tortoise shell.

The John Day Beds are still an active research area.
