The trail as it starts out from Mattole Beach
Reminds me a lot of Sleeping Bear Dunes
Looking North from Mattole
Heading south to Punta Gorda
Barbara and David head down the beach
The key is to find that 'sweet spot' where you don't get your feet wet, but it's firm enough that you don't sink in dry sand
You find all kinds of interesting things washed up on the beach
My footprints (I was dragging my trekking poles)
A private cabin near Punta Gorda
One of the rare stretches of single track trail
Most of the hike is on the beach or on old 2-track road
Lupine and other wildflowers
Punta Gorda Lighthouse
Kinda cute, in his own snakey way
My Xanadu in a beach shelter
It's really windy on this part of the Coast, so these rough shelters are nice
Note: rumor is they were removed in spring 2010
History of the lighthouse
Harbor Seals at Punta Gorda
An old tank washed up on the beach by the lighthouse
David by the lighthouse
Winding stairs to second level
These guys were so curious and nervous (and cute)
Back in the Shelter
Paige, Steve, and David
Nice to have protection from the brutal wind here
Looking south - tomorrow's route
And other shelters - they would all fill up by sunset. So many people here for the holiday weekend!
Home Sweet Home
The Golite Xanadu and the beach shelter
It is customary to find something on the beach to contribute to the decor
47615 Lost Coast Trail?
Dinner - always heavy food the first night
A can of Fosters and boil-in-bag Indian food from Trader Joes
Seals watch us suspiciously from off shore.
He's grown hair since last year
Clouds rolled in around sunset
Sunset on day 1
Day two dawned foggy and drizzly
Sea Lion Rock
We could hear them barking from a mile away
Zoom in on all the sea lions
Flowers (and lots of poison oak)
Another rock with loud sea lions
Looking north along the Lost Coast
We're taking the Lost Coast Trail
It looks so easy in theory, flat and straight along the coast, but boy does that beach walking tire you out!
Cooking out wet clothes and gear
It rained most of the day, so the camera stayed put away until camp. Time to dry out!
Craig dries a pair of socks
Mmm....toasted boots for dinner.
With smoked pants for dessert.
