GPS track of our climb to Split Mountain
First we have to pick our way around Lake 3535. It's a beautiful, clear, still morning.
Mather Pass is the low point on the ridge. We later found out that Paige and crew crossed the pass about the same time we were on the Split Mtn summit. Hi guys!
Heading for the saddle. It's straightforward cross country. Mosquitoes are annoying. Pikas are chirping.
Looking back on Lake 3535
That's still a lot of snow for August 11.
Near the saddle, looking up Split. From here it's just straight up through the rocks.
Mt Prater is on the other side of the saddle.
Near the saddle.
It's not long before I spy the first Polemonium (sky pilot) of the climb. I think I smelled it before I saw it. Yay! My favorite flower.
Gorgeous color, great smell, and living in my favorite place - the highest peaks of the Sierra. How can it NOT be my favorite flower?
Mather Pass looks so puny from here.
Polemonium guides the way up the peak.
Pretty straightforward - no class 2 scrambliness, just walk on up.
It's everywhere! I love the color among the desolate grey granite.
I'm pretty sure I took a photo of every polemonium on the side of Split.
