On Sunday Paige, Fred, Sooz and I headed up the Old Big Oak Flat Road. We started off with nice views of Ribbon Falls.
El Capitan from the 'wood yard' - the starting point of the old road.
Looking across the valley to Bridalveil falls. Amazing!
Paige and Sooz photographing the view of El Cap and Half Dome.
The old road used to be the only approach to Yosemite Valley, until the current route was built in 1940. Now it is quickly returning to nature thanks to the regular rockslides falling from the walls above.
Old pavement and rockslide
The view of El Cap, Half Dome, and Rainbow Falls are absolutely perfect from this old road.
Valley view from the Old Road
About a mile along the old road, the rockfall becomes a bit more extreme and some care is required to follow the old route. The road swichbacks and is covered with rocks now.
