Leaving Palisade Lake
We're going that-a-way
A waterfall we passed only minutes into today's hike.
Paige and Taylor
we're going to drop into the shadowy canyon.
Looking back toward Disappointment Peak (hmm...why is it so disappointing?)
Palisade Creek Canyon
lots of dead trees from a recent fire. We didn't know that half of them would be across the trail...sigh.
It's me at the top of the Golden Staircase
Paige and Taylor are on the switchback below.
Looking down the canyon toward the Devil's Crags.
Switchbacks take you straight down the Golden Staircase - the last stretch of the JMT to be completed.
Golden Staircase walls
Wildflowers of every color.
Rock along the golden staircase.
Looking back up the chute that contains the tight switchbacks.
Waterfall - not even on the map!
Waterfall below the Golden Staircase
There was a lovely cooling mist coming off of these falls.
Deer in Palisade Canyon
Someone mentioned that the deer were being over-hunted by mountain lions in this region, but we saw several over this day and the next. This girl was, coincidentally, near Deer Meadow.
The occasional pretty stream and wildflowers would perk us up on this relatively dull stretch.
Interesting wildflower - what are these? I haven't seen them before.
Comment if you know!
Meadow - Devil's Crags in the distance.
Nearing the end of the canyon (finally). Not my favorite stretch of the trail. Deadfall is annoying.
Leg 2 - up LeConte canyon
Lunch stop at the intersection of the creeks.
Immediately we are treated to much better views as we turn up LeConte. This was a beautiful place!
Rushing waterfalls (that's an enormous tree trunk in the middle of the falls)
Waterfall coming from Ladder Lake
Middle Fork, Kings River
Looking up LeConte Canyon
we'll be heading all the way up there tomorrow to go over Muir Pass.
Looking back at the Citadel and the Ladder Lake drainage.
Bridge by LeConte ranger station.
(hmm.... we saw a deer near Deer Meadow, a grouse near Grouse Meadow - remind me to stay away from anything called Mountan Lion or Bear Meadow!)
A baby grouse! So cute...
The day's final stretch
LeConte ranger station to the far end of Big Pete Meadow.
We get some shade as the sun dips behind Langille Peak.
We approach Little Pete Meadow.
And we found a decent campsite at the far end of Big Pete Meadow.
