I stopped at Sierra View to pick out some new peaks to climb!
Zoomer on some of the peaks
More sierra zoomer, including Cloudripper, Sill, North Pal
Looking further north - Bishop in the valley below
I drove all the way to the White Mountain trailhead, but I'm not going that far today.
Looking back on the vehicles parked at the gate. Several hunters out too.
Barcroft Lab ahead
White Mountain Research Center, studying physiological effects of high elevation.
The road continues beyond the research facility, another ~5 miles to the summit of white. But I'm not going that far today.
The sheep herd used for studies at Barcroft.
Today's target: Barcroft Peak. A little side peak on the way to White that is often ignored in favor of its neighbor.
However, Mt Barcroft has the honor of being number 8 on the list of highest non-sierra peaks in California.
White Mountain, viewed from the walk up Barcroft
Lots of signatures in the register, many there for research at Barcroft lab. One study was about the effects of Ibuprophen on elevation issues.

View south along the white mountains.
I wanted to hike some of those peaks, but there were a bunch of hunters out and I didn't feel safe going too far astray from where people would be expected to be seen.
Bishop far below.
Me on Barcroft. It was windy and chilly.
I cross-countried back to the road in a more direct line, so no saying hi to the sheep at the research center.
Where I popped back onto the road - looking back at Barcroft (the peak on the left, and the research station on the right).
GPS track on topo map.
Driving out along the long, bumpy road. Fun in the outback.
I stopped at the Patriarch Grove on the way back. Beautiful bristlecones!

More washboardy rocky road. Wheee.
