I was so busy looking at the badlands view that I almost stepped on this guy hanging out in the middle of the trail. He provided us with some great laughs. He was definitely a juvenile, pretty small (red diamond rattlesnake?) and even though he barely had any rattle he was still shaking his tail furiously. He was also trying to coil up, but the blasting winds (we were leaning into huge gusts as soon as we got over the saddle) kept knocking him over. He certainly tried hard. Eventually he gave up and wiggled off the trail. I think he was mad that we were laughing at his attempts to look scary.
