Saturday morning we drove out via Sonora Pass and then out along Bridgeport Reservoir. We turned south into the Bodie Hills and started exploring. First stop: Success Mine (not so successful actually).
View north from Success Mine. Sweetwater range, Sierra.
The Sierra Crest pokes out - view towards Matterhorn/Twin Lakes area
Typical road back here
Next stop: Chemung Mine ruins

Next we moved on to the ruins of Masonic.
A tram station way up on the hill above the mill ruins.

Masonic Mill ruins and old nearly intact cabin
Just beyond Masonic we parked the truck and did the quick hike up Masonic Peak
There are lots of approaches to this peak but this is the shortest (and steepest).
Our route up Masonic
Great views across to the sierra!
Looking back down on the truck (which speck above the rock). Steep and gravelly road. I walked on the brush to keep from sliding on the hike down.
The two snowy closer peaks are Potato and Bodie - our next destination.
Still a lot of snow up there...
Summit of Masonic
Me on Masonic. It's nothing special as far as peaks go, but it's named on the map and has great views - good enough for me!
I found the summit register about 100 feet down off the side of the mountain. Brought it back up. Someone had put a AAA map in it as the register. Needs a book.
View west towards the Sierra from the summit of Masonic
Teeny truck down there.
